Southwest Discus Southwest Discus Hatchery has been keeping and breeding Discus for over 11 years. Currently we are breeding Leopard Bulldogs with 4 pairs, each pair housed in their own 29 gallon tank. In all I have more than 60 tanks with several different strains of Discus available. Because there are so many beautiful strains avaiable we just cannot breed them all. We now import some of the best Discus types to keep up with local demand from Malaysia Leading Discus Breeders. Below are a few Discus we currently are working with.

Native to the Amazon Basin of South America, discus (Symphysodon spp.) are freshwater cichlid fish related to angelfish. Their common name comes from their round, flattened bodies, which resemble a dish or disc and are six to eight inches both long and tall. Their genus name, Symphysodon, means “jaw grinder.” Large-lipped carnivores, they take in food, such as worms, insects, and crustaceans, grind it up, spit it out, and pick it up again for regrinding before swallowing.
In the wild, discus live in a unique freshwater environment. At certain
times of the year, the water is very warm—up to 30°C (86°F) —and highly
acidic. They also prefer “soft” water, which has low mineral content.
